Dua Lipa is an English singer and songwriter who started her career when she was only 14. She has since the earned herself international recognition. When she started, she did covers for songs by other artists on YouTube before she was signed with Warner Music Group. She was also featured in an advert for the X Factor. Her own dad was in a rock band and influenced her a lot. When she was only 11, she tried to get into her school choir but was not accepted. Her name is Albanian and contrary to what most people think, Dua Lipa is actually her real name. Dua means love. Despite her short career, she has been able to make a lot of tours. She tried modeling for a short while when she was young.
Lipa went to Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time before her family moved to Kosovo in 2008she began posting covers for other artists such as Pink on YouTube when she was 14. She went back to London when she was 15 and aspired to be a singer. She started working on her first album for Warner Music Group in 2015. In the same year, she released the singles ‘Be the One’ and ‘New Love.’ ‘Be the One’ was a major hit in Europe and it was number one in Belgium, Slovakia and Poland. She was one of the acts on BBC’s ‘Sound of..’ She did her first tour in the UK and Europe at the beginning of 2016. She ended the tour in November of the same year. In 2016, she released the singles ‘Last Dance’ ‘Hotter than Hell,’ and ‘Blow your Mind.’ ‘Blow your Mind’ entered the US Billboard Hot 100 as number 72 becoming her first entry into the US. It was number 23 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 Chart and number one on Billboard Dance Club Songs.

Towards the end of 2016, Lipa was featured in Sean Paul’s ‘No Lie’. The song was a hit and it became number 10 in the UK. In the same year, Fader Magazine commissioned a documentary about Lipa. She released the single ‘Scared to Be Lonely’ with Martin Garrix early 2017 and it reached number 14 in the UK. On the same year, she released her first studio album.
A single from the self-titled album, ‘New Rules,’ became her first number one song in the UK. It was number two in Australia and number six in the US. She performed at the Glastonbury Festival and on BBC’s Later….with Jools Holland. Spotify named her the most streamed woman of 2017 in the UK. Four of her singles (‘Be the One, New Rules, No Lie and Bridge over Troubled Water) were in the UK top 10 in 2017. In 2018, she received nominations for Brit Awards than any other artist.
She was nominated in five categories as; British Single of the Year, MasterCard British Album of the year, British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and British Video of The Year. She won awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist. She performed at the ceremony held at the O2 Arena in London. She worked with Whethan, an electronic music producer, to release the song ‘High’. It was used as the soundtrack for ‘Fifty Shades Freed.’ She also worked with Calvin Harris to release the single ‘One Kiss’ in April 2018. The single was number one in the UK Singles Chart.

Her albums and singles have received recognition in the UK, USA and the entire world. In 2018, she became the first female artist to receive five nominations in the Brit Awards. She received more nominations than every other artist. Her song, ‘High’ with electronic music producer, Whethan, was used as the soundtrack for ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ that was released in February 2018.
She founded the Sunny Hill Foundation in 2016 with her father to give donations to the citizens of Prishtina Kosovo. She believes that those in a position of success should be willing to pass it on to others. The charity’s mission is to reduce poverty and injustices and to offer assistance to those that are in need of it. It supports groups and projects that have the potential to make an impact in the society. Funding decisions are based on objectivity with the aim to make the Kosovo community able to take care of itself.
In 2017, she became the most streamed woman. She was nominated for the ASCAP Vanguard Award, Glamour Awards, SCTV Music Awards and Wish 107.5 and she won. She was nominated for BAMA Music Awards, BBC, BBC Music Awards, Echo Awards, Electronic Music Awards, Gaygalan Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards, International Music Awards MTV Millennial Awards, Radio Disney Music Awards, Urban Music Awards, Telehit Awards, Teen Choice Awards, The Beano Awards and Silver Chef Music Awards but she did not win. She has received six nominations for the BRIT Awards and she won twice. She was nominated for European Border Breakers Awards three times and she won.
