Asha Bhosle’s controversial chartbuster reflecting the drug-induced hippie culture of Nepal, didn’t initially find favour with the film’s leading man and producer, Dev Anand. However R.D. Burman’s persuasion ensured it’s inclusion and established the on-screen starlet Zeenat Aman’s future career. Initially vilified by conservatives for not only glamourising drug taking but also for offending the Hindu faith, today the song’s immense popularity shows it has clearly outlived its critics. stats
